In addition, the giant exoplanet currently lies 737 astronomical units (AU) from the double star, about 25 times more distant from the pair than Neptune is from our sun. (One AU is the average Earth-sun distance, which is about 93 million miles, or 150 million kilometers.)
So HD 106906 b is a pretty curious character. Indeed, scientists have been debating whether the alien planet is still a bona fide member of the HD 106906 system or if it’s now speeding away from the two stars, having been booted out by a gravitational interaction.
There’s evidence that such a booting did take place: photos captured a few years ago by the Gemini South Telescope in Chile show that HD 106906’s outer dust disk and inner comet disk are lopsided. HD 106906 b could have done this sculpting if the planet formed close to the system’s center and was then kicked outward after a close encounter with the double stars, previous modeling work has indicated.

Such a disturbance would ordinarily send a planet out of its home system entirely, turning it into a ’rogue’ that wanders the galaxy alone, free of any host star — unless its departure was arrested by another gravitational interaction, this time with a star that wandered close to the HD 106906 system.
Last year, a group that included two of the three authors on the new study identified several stars that could have provided such a nudge about 3 million years ago. And the new paper suggests that one of those interloping stars may indeed have kept HD 106906 b from becoming a runaway.
In the new work, researchers led by Meiji Nguyen, a recent graduate of the University of California, Berkeley, analyzed observations of the HD 106906 system made between 2004 and 2018 by NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope. The astronomers also compared the Hubble images with data gathered by Europe’s Gaia spacecraft, which is precisely mapping the positions and movements of billions of stars in our Milky Way galaxy.

These combined data sets allowed the three scientists to nail down the positions of the HD 106906 binary and the giant planet. They found that HD 106906 b is likely in an elliptical and very long — but stable — orbit around its two parent stars, completing one lap every 15,000 years.
’Though it’s only been 14 years of observations, we were still able to, surprisingly, get a constraint on the orbit for the first time, confirming our suspicion that it was very misaligned and also that the planet is on an approximately 15,000-year orbit,’ Nguyen said in a statement.
’The fact that our results are consistent with predictions is, I think, a strong piece of evidence that this planet is, indeed, bound. In the future, a radial-velocity measurement is needed to confirm our findings,’ Nguyen added. (Radial-velocity measurements quantify the gravitational tug exerted by planets upon their host stars.)
What does this have to do with Planet Nine? The inferred history of HD 106906 b is similar to that proposed to explain how Planet Nine — or Planet Next, Planet X or Giant Planet Five, for those who will always regard Pluto as our solar system’s ninth planet — could have gotten into, and remained in, its putative orbit, a highly elliptical path that keeps it hundreds of AU from the sun.

The astronomers also compared the Hubble images with data gathered by Europe’s Gaia spacecraft, which is precisely mapping the positions and movements of billions of stars in our Milky Way galaxy.

These combined data sets allowed the three scientists to nail down the positions of the HD 106906 binary and the giant planet. They found that HD 106906 b is likely in an elliptical and very long — but stable — orbit around its two parent stars, completing one lap every 15,000 years.
’Though it’s only been 14 years of observations, we were still able to, surprisingly, get a constraint on the orbit for the first time, confirming our suspicion that it was very misaligned and also that the planet is on an approximately 15,000-year orbit,’ Nguyen said in a statement.
’The fact that our results are consistent with predictions is, I think, a strong piece of evidence that this planet is, indeed, bound. In the future, a radial-velocity measurement is needed to confirm our findings,’ Nguyen added. (Radial-velocity measurements quantify the gravitational tug exerted by planets upon their host stars.)
What does this have to do with Planet Nine? Planet Nine may not be such an oddball after all, if it does indeed exist.
The exotic exoplanet HD 106906 b is an analog of sorts of Planet Nine, the Neptune-size world hypothesized to lurk in the outer reaches of our own solar system, a new study suggests.
HD 106906 b was discovered in 2013. It’s about 11 times more massive than Jupiter and lies 336 light-years from Earth, near the double star HD 106906.

The HD 106906 stellar duo is very young — just 15 million years old — and is still surrounded by a dusty debris disk. HD 106906 b apparently emerged from that disk but is now quite removed from it, zooming along high above the disk’s plane. In addition, the giant exoplanet currently lies 737 astronomical units (AU) from the double star, about 25 times more distant from the pair than Neptune is from our sun. (One AU is the average Earth-sun distance, which is about 93 million miles, or 150 million kilometers.)
So HD 106906 b is a pretty curious character. Indeed, scientists have been debating whether the alien planet is still a bona fide member of the HD 106906 system or if it’s now speeding away from the two stars, having been booted out by a gravitational interaction. Trades and compendiums are too tall for regular book spaces and so heavy and irregular that it feels like you need six different kinds of shelving just to start. On top of all that, they’re fragile! Never fear! There are more options than you might think for organizing your comic book collection. Below you’ll find ideas separated into three levels based on cost and effort.The Basics
Traditional Bookshelves
Though they will never really be good for single issue comic book storage, there are ways to adapt bookcases for trade paperbacks (those are those handy collections of 6-10 issues in one volume), graphic novels, and huge compendiums. When shopping for a bookshelf to store your comic book collection, there are two main things to look for:
If you collect comics then this app is a necessity. 1st being able to catalog all your comics is needed. The barcode scanner makes it easy to simply scan each comic into your inventory. Then you are able to access it anywhere you are.
Adjustable shelves—Most modern bookshelves are built so that shelves can be moved to create whatever height you need. You’ll probably have a shelf and a little space left over, which makes a great display shelf for things like Funko Pops or action figures.
*Alphabetize each box of comics separately. Rather than trying to keep the boxes in one consecutive alpha order spanning your collection (Example: All the ’A’s in Boxes 1 and 2, all the ’B’s in Box 3, etc.) just make each box its own domain.
*Comic books are worth something, especially to the owners that have collected and read those comics. Now, from a monetary standpoint, your comic book may not be worth much of anything. This is an important thing to think about when you are selling your comic book collection. But My Comic Book Is Old! Narrow build—Comic book collections are heavy, no matter their form. Wide shelves will start to bend in the middle and have more trouble supporting the weight over time.
File Folders
Regular filing solutions from office supply or discount stores can be a great solution for single issues, especially if you are not into keeping your comics pristine inside their bags. I’ve seen all kinds of filing boxes and folders used for comics, but accordion folders seem to be one of the most popular. They come in all kinds of colors and sizes, and the smaller plastic ones are perfect for loaning a series to a friend. Magazine Files
Also called bank boxes, these are a personal favorite for storing your comic book collection. This is one of the most versatile options and probably the most attractive cheapish one. These are great for organization and keeping your floppies on shelves without them falling over all the time or getting all mixed up. Just be careful that you don’t go TOO cheap. I bought a pack once that was so cheap the bottoms all dropped out as soon as I filled them up. Look for ones that have a solid bottom and are not collapsible. There are a ton of options for organizing your comic book collection, from the super attractive IKEA collections to plain ones you can decorate yourself.Level Up
Short and Long Boxes
These lovely little things are built specifically to store your comic book collection. Not only are they made to be exactly the right size for comic books, they are usually made with treated cardboard that is less susceptible to moisture and bugs.
If you’re anything like me, these will feel like a big step. “Am I really the kind of person who has special comic book boxes?” But really, they’re just boxes!
Long boxes are probably not the right choice unless you have a massive collection and space to spare. Short boxes, though, are convenient and affordable for organizing your comic book collection. The downside is that they can make it a hassle to get to your comics, especially if you’re going to stack them. (And don’t stack them too high! I recommend no more than three in a stack or it will slowly start smushing the bottom box.)
But if you have a big collection of back issues you don’t plan to want very often, are pressed for space, or are planning for a move, they are perfect. There are also a ton of fancy options out there (Boxes in Action has gorgeous and officially licensed designs) but you can also customize them easily yourself.
Cube Shelving
Best app for file transfer between android and mac os. MacDroid is a compact Android file transfer application that works great on OS X Yosemite and later versions of Mac OS including Big Sur. While being small, this tool has all the power you need for a smooth and glitch-free file transfer between your computer and device.
These shelves, commonly from Ikea but available many places, are arranged in cubes that often come already tall enough for storing your comic book collection. Plus, the short shelf length is very sturdy so you don’t have to worry about them warping under the weight. Many versions, like the IKEA Kallax (pictured here), are deep enough to be either double sided or filled two rows deep—another great option if you have collections you don’t need to access regularly.
There are also lots of boxes/drawers you can get to fit inside these shelves. Fabric ones are cheap and look nice, though they can collect a lot of dirt and dust and be hard to clean. There are also some hard plastic options that are usually a little more expensive but easier to keep nice. I love this option because it’s so versatile and easy to add units to. Epic
Custom Boxes

Community involvementms. schrader’s teaching portfolio allocation. There is no shortage of custom comic storage to be found online for organizing your comic book collection.
From hand-decorated magazine files to custom display cases, there are many luxury solutions for storing your comic book collection. Maybe you have a small collection of valuable issues you want to take special care of, or maybe you have some disposable income and a strict ascetic.
Etsy, of course, has a great many choices, but you’ll be amazed at how many you’ll find all over the internet. The Etsy shop Romany House is a good place to start, with box options that run from $27 to $100, all of them lovely and cool. There are also some great display options, like this one that mounts to the wall but still holds multiple issues. Of course, if you have a handy friend or your own DIY skills, you can always make your own.
Custom Units
If you have the cash (or some impressive carpentry skills), custom storage for your comic book collection is the dream solution. That doesn’t mean you have to reinvent the wheel and invent a new storage style (though you certainly can).
Say hello to customizable backgrounds!. One of the easiest things is to go into a shop with shelving or storage you love and ask them about it. If they had them custom made the carpenter should be able to reproduce it without much trouble. The price tag will be more Tony Stark than Peter Parker, but there are some significant benefits.
First of all, it’s custom—you can store your comic book collection exactly the way you want to and it will all be done as tall, short, wide, deep as you want it. The second is that, as long as the work is done well, it will probably sturdier than almost anything you’ll buy ready made.
That means it will survive moves, heavy collections, and your drunk friend who thinks he’s the Hulk. The unit pictured here is a great example, though it’s not clear if they’re still available. If there’s a craftsman in your area, I highly recommend working with them directly so that you can sit down and go over the design carefully.

A similar sentiment is being repeated over and over by collectors of high-grade key issue comic books from the 1980s and 90s. This period is known as the Copper Age of comic book collecting and encompasses one of the most volatile periods in the history of comic book collecting. Today, roughly 90 to 95 percent of all the comic books published within this time period are worth just a fraction of their original cover price. Still, much like every other time period in comic book collecting, there are those few key issues that slipped through the cracks and became worth their weight in gold. That being said, it is worth mentioning that since most comic books from the 80s and 90s were bought and hoarded by speculators en masse, for these books to be worth anything substantial, they must be maintained in extremely high grade. This cannot be stressed enough. Here is a list of some of the most valuable books from the Copper Age. Happy hunting.
10. Vampirella #113: The most controversial entry on this list, critics will disagree because a copy of Vampirella in CGC 9.4 would easily sell for only $300 to $400. However, this is a magazine-sized comic, and as of yet these books do not have the same collectability as standard-size comic book issues. Released in 1988, this issue is the last of the long-standing series. Most copies were left unsold and returned to the distributor. If this book ever gets the attention it deserves, prices will start to reflect that.
9. New Mutants #87: Published in 1990 by Marvel Comics and featuring the first appearance of Cable, this comic had two printings, and you want the red cover version, which is the first print. Cable was a Marvel Comics character who at the time wasnt as important as viewed today. As a result, this book is worth close to $150 ungraded in near-mint condition and $500 when graded by CGC (Comics Guaranty Corporation) in 9.8.
8. Wolverine Limited Series #1: Published by Marvel Comics in 1982 and featuring art by acclaimed comic artist and writer Frank Miller, in near-mint condition this book is worth between $50 to $75, which isnt bad given how many were hoarded and kept unread. However, when CGC graded in 9.8, the value shoots up to $250 to $350, and it is highly liquid on the secondary market.
7. New Mutants #98: Published by Marvel Comics in 1991 and featuring the first full appearance of Deadpool, one of the most controversial superheroes of all time. Back in 1991, no one thought the character would ever transition to the silver screen, but Marvel created a true masterpiece in 2016 when Deadpool hit theaters to massive commercial success. A near-mint copy of New Mutants #98 can be sold today for $200 all day long on eBay, with CGC-graded 9.8 copies selling for $800, but be warned, during the pre-movie hype in 2015, CGC-graded 9.8 copies were selling for over $1,200 each.
6. Amazing Spider-Man #238: Published in 1983 and featuring the first appearance of the Hobgoblin, this book almost slipped through the cracks back when it was released, but due to a fairly high print run, speculators started hoarding the book in the early 1990s. Today, a near-mint ungraded copy goes for around $100 or more, and a CGC-graded book in 9.8 can easily sell for $600 or more. This is another comic of this era that would be considered highly liquid.
5. Amazing Spider-Man # 252: Marvel Comics introduced Spider-Mans black costume in 1984 via this issue, but why was the costume black and what secrets was it hiding? The answer turned this into a key issue comic book almost overnight. Prices for near-mint copies are now topping $100, while a CGC-graded book in 9.8 can net $500.
4. Amazing Spider-Man #300: By far the most sought after Spider-Man comic to be published in the 1990s, Spider-Man #300 features the first appearance of Venom. Even though most longtime comic dealers have dozens of these books in stock, it is in high demand since Marvel recently announced the release of an upcoming Venom solo film. Ungraded in near-mint, the book commands a minimum of $300 on eBay, with graded CGC 9.8 copies soaring to an unbelievable price of $1,700 to $2,000. Hint, collectors should probably not buy this book at this time. The market will settle by as much as 25 percent or more following the films release.
3. Albedo #2: Now we get to the ultra rare books. Albedo was created by independent publisher Thoughts and Ideas in 1984, and the book would have went nowhere except for the fact that the strange character introduced in this issue (Usagi Yojimbo) made a major appearance in the Teenage Mutant Ninja series. As a result of that feat alone, this book has a lot of value, but it should be noted that the chances of anyone having a legitimate original printing are quite slim. Still, if a CGC-graded comic would surface (and there are a few) in 9.8, it would be worth close to $10,000. Even ungraded and in near-mint-minus condition, this book is easily worth low four figures.
2. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1 (first printing): The very first printing of the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comic was done in black and white and featured everyones favorite heroes in half shells armed with guns. This is one reason why the first printing is sought after. Major changes were made to bring the comic to children audiences. The chances of finding an authentic first printing of this book in near-mint condition are scarce-to-none; however, it would be worth several thousand dollars ungraded, with graded copies being sold for $5,000 to $9,000 depending on the coveted CGC grade. Definitely one of the most investment-grade comics to ever come out of the 1980s, if you can find one, it is well worth the money, but forgeries do exist.

Gobbledygook #1: Created by Eastman and Laird, who are well known for their creation of Teenage Mutant Ninjas, Gobbledygook had an estimated print run of between 150 to 500 copies, making it one of the rarest comic books ever. It was also controversial due to violent themes and content. Forgeries are quite common, so buy only a CGC-graded copy, and expect to pay close to $10,000 for one in very fine to near-mint condition.
So, the next time someone tells you that 1980s and 1990s comics are worthless, show them this list.

From hand-decorated magazine files to custom display cases, there are many luxury solutions for storing your comic book collection. Maybe you have a small collection of valuable issues you want to take special care of, or maybe you have some disposable income and a strict ascetic.
Etsy, of course, has a great many choices, but you’ll be amazed at how many you’ll find all over the internet. The Etsy shop Romany House is a good place to start, with box options that run from $27 to $100, all of them lovely and cool. There are also some great display options, like this one that mounts to the wall but still holds multiple issues. Of course, if you have a handy friend or your own DIY skills, you can always make your own.
Custom Units
If you have the cash (or some impressive carpentry skills), custom storage for your comic book collection is the dream solution. That doesn’t mean you have to reinvent the wheel and invent a new storage style (though you certainly can).
Say hello to customizable backgrounds!. One of the easiest things is to go into a shop with shelving or storage you love and ask them about it. If they had them custom made the carpenter should be able to reproduce it without much trouble. The price tag will be more Tony Stark than Peter Parker, but there are some significant benefits.
First of all, it’s custom—you can store your comic book collection exactly the way you want to and it will all be done as tall, short, wide, deep as you want it. The second is that, as long as the work is done well, it will probably sturdier than almost anything you’ll buy ready made.
That means it will survive moves, heavy collections, and your drunk friend who thinks he’s the Hulk. The unit pictured here is a great example, though it’s not clear if they’re still available. If there’s a craftsman in your area, I highly recommend working with them directly so that you can sit down and go over the design carefully.

A similar sentiment is being repeated over and over by collectors of high-grade key issue comic books from the 1980s and 90s. This period is known as the Copper Age of comic book collecting and encompasses one of the most volatile periods in the history of comic book collecting. Today, roughly 90 to 95 percent of all the comic books published within this time period are worth just a fraction of their original cover price. Still, much like every other time period in comic book collecting, there are those few key issues that slipped through the cracks and became worth their weight in gold. That being said, it is worth mentioning that since most comic books from the 80s and 90s were bought and hoarded by speculators en masse, for these books to be worth anything substantial, they must be maintained in extremely high grade. This cannot be stressed enough. Here is a list of some of the most valuable books from the Copper Age. Happy hunting.
10. Vampirella #113: The most controversial entry on this list, critics will disagree because a copy of Vampirella in CGC 9.4 would easily sell for only $300 to $400. However, this is a magazine-sized comic, and as of yet these books do not have the same collectability as standard-size comic book issues. Released in 1988, this issue is the last of the long-standing series. Most copies were left unsold and returned to the distributor. If this book ever gets the attention it deserves, prices will start to reflect that.
9. New Mutants #87: Published in 1990 by Marvel Comics and featuring the first appearance of Cable, this comic had two printings, and you want the red cover version, which is the first print. Cable was a Marvel Comics character who at the time wasnt as important as viewed today. As a result, this book is worth close to $150 ungraded in near-mint condition and $500 when graded by CGC (Comics Guaranty Corporation) in 9.8.
8. Wolverine Limited Series #1: Published by Marvel Comics in 1982 and featuring art by acclaimed comic artist and writer Frank Miller, in near-mint condition this book is worth between $50 to $75, which isnt bad given how many were hoarded and kept unread. However, when CGC graded in 9.8, the value shoots up to $250 to $350, and it is highly liquid on the secondary market.
7. New Mutants #98: Published by Marvel Comics in 1991 and featuring the first full appearance of Deadpool, one of the most controversial superheroes of all time. Back in 1991, no one thought the character would ever transition to the silver screen, but Marvel created a true masterpiece in 2016 when Deadpool hit theaters to massive commercial success. A near-mint copy of New Mutants #98 can be sold today for $200 all day long on eBay, with CGC-graded 9.8 copies selling for $800, but be warned, during the pre-movie hype in 2015, CGC-graded 9.8 copies were selling for over $1,200 each.
6. Amazing Spider-Man #238: Published in 1983 and featuring the first appearance of the Hobgoblin, this book almost slipped through the cracks back when it was released, but due to a fairly high print run, speculators started hoarding the book in the early 1990s. Today, a near-mint ungraded copy goes for around $100 or more, and a CGC-graded book in 9.8 can easily sell for $600 or more. This is another comic of this era that would be considered highly liquid.
5. Amazing Spider-Man # 252: Marvel Comics introduced Spider-Mans black costume in 1984 via this issue, but why was the costume black and what secrets was it hiding? The answer turned this into a key issue comic book almost overnight. Prices for near-mint copies are now topping $100, while a CGC-graded book in 9.8 can net $500.
4. Amazing Spider-Man #300: By far the most sought after Spider-Man comic to be published in the 1990s, Spider-Man #300 features the first appearance of Venom. Even though most longtime comic dealers have dozens of these books in stock, it is in high demand since Marvel recently announced the release of an upcoming Venom solo film. Ungraded in near-mint, the book commands a minimum of $300 on eBay, with graded CGC 9.8 copies soaring to an unbelievable price of $1,700 to $2,000. Hint, collectors should probably not buy this book at this time. The market will settle by as much as 25 percent or more following the films release.
3. Albedo #2: Now we get to the ultra rare books. Albedo was created by independent publisher Thoughts and Ideas in 1984, and the book would have went nowhere except for the fact that the strange character introduced in this issue (Usagi Yojimbo) made a major appearance in the Teenage Mutant Ninja series. As a result of that feat alone, this book has a lot of value, but it should be noted that the chances of anyone having a legitimate original printing are quite slim. Still, if a CGC-graded comic would surface (and there are a few) in 9.8, it would be worth close to $10,000. Even ungraded and in near-mint-minus condition, this book is easily worth low four figures.
2. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1 (first printing): The very first printing of the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comic was done in black and white and featured everyones favorite heroes in half shells armed with guns. This is one reason why the first printing is sought after. Major changes were made to bring the comic to children audiences. The chances of finding an authentic first printing of this book in near-mint condition are scarce-to-none; however, it would be worth several thousand dollars ungraded, with graded copies being sold for $5,000 to $9,000 depending on the coveted CGC grade. Definitely one of the most investment-grade comics to ever come out of the 1980s, if you can find one, it is well worth the money, but forgeries do exist.

Gobbledygook #1: Created by Eastman and Laird, who are well known for their creation of Teenage Mutant Ninjas, Gobbledygook had an estimated print run of between 150 to 500 copies, making it one of the rarest comic books ever. It was also controversial due to violent themes and content. Forgeries are quite common, so buy only a CGC-graded copy, and expect to pay close to $10,000 for one in very fine to near-mint condition.
So, the next time someone tells you that 1980s and 1990s comics are worthless, show them this list.

The performing arts club’s fall production was the musical You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown. Although time constraints kept me from being. *Yesterday I was given the opportunity to cover a grade 1 class as the teachers were in a collaborative meeting. I was excited to have more teaching experience in a different grade level. I began to teach the class a social lesson covering landmarks. It was interesting to see the difference between the grade one class and my grade five class.
Despite being crowned Nursing Times’ most inspirational nurse leader award in 2015 and winning the elderly care award in 2013, Wendy Mashlan very nearly missed out on being a nurse altogether.

“I didn’t have aspirations to become a nurse when I was younger,” she says. “But my mother became ill and I was incredibly inspired by the nurses on her ward.”
Ms. Mashlan went on to qualify in 1994 and by 2000 she was a ward manager. When the role of nurse practitioner was created in 2002 a colleague encouraged her to apply and today she leads a team of 14 at the Prince of Wales Hospital in Bridgend, part of the Abertawe Bro Morgannwyg University Health Board (ABMU).
Her work is primarily focused on elderly care, a field of nursing she believes is “often seen as negative, but it is actually one of the most challenging areas.”
Wendy explains that her patients often have multifaceted needs. “It takes a certain kind of person to work with the elderly,” she says. “ But I enjoy the challenge of dealing with many different needs, helping the patient cope and supporting the people caring for them.”
In addition to her clinical management role, Ms. Mashlan is also involved in research and teaching in the hospital and at university. She has been involved in developing a number of national policies including portfolio guidelines for the National Leadership and Innovation Agency, and RCN Safeguarding for Adults. Recent innovations have included an ANP-led elderly care ward referral system.
The Inspirational Nursing Leaders Award is awarded yearly to professionals who are selected for the impact of their work on nursing policy, practice or care; their influence on and understanding of how health and social care fit together; the sustainability of their achievement and the extent to which they act as role models for others. Many are nominated by Nursing Times readers and the final list is compiled by a panel of expert judges.
Wendy says of her two awards, “they raise the profile of what we do” but declares “one would have been enough!” She was awarded them for her help in running a specialist assessment service for older people arriving at the Bridgend hospital’s emergency department and for her current work as Lead Advance Nurse Practitioner. More recently Wendy has helped develop schemes such as the Frail Older Persons Assessment Tool (FOPAT).
This was developed following the publication of the Andrew Report: “Trusted to Care” in 2014 that identified poor documentation of the care of elderly patients among other issues at ABMU. It is designed to cut through unnecessary documentation and concentrate instead on the actual needs of each patient.
Other improvements on the wards at ABMU include increasing the number of baths for patients. Staff amended shift patterns to free up more time and are now able to bathe up to five patients daily. Also introduced was a hostess system, where hostesses serve food and thereby leave more time for nurses to help patients who struggle to eat unaided. Nurses and healthcare support workers are also freer to sit with patients in the day room, encouraging activities such as games and jigsaws.
Social events for patients, such as afternoon teas, and inviting live musicians to play have been organised by Wendy and other nurses at the Prince of Wales hospital; all designed to help patients feel more comfortable and at home.

Once she finishes her PhD however she admits she would like to head towards a consultant nurse post, but for now, “I absolutely love my role.”
The State Administration of Market Regulation has kicked off investigations into the Alibaba Group, laying claim that the company has been involved in monopolistic conduct such as ’forced exclusivity’ by requiring e-commerce merchants to pick only one platform as their exclusive distribution channel, according to the South China Morning Post. “I didn’t have aspirations to become a nurse when I was younger,” she says. “But my mother became ill and I was incredibly inspired by the nurses on her ward.”
Ms. Mashlan went on to qualify in 1994 and by 2000 she was a ward manager. When the role of nurse practitioner was created in 2002 a colleague encouraged her to apply and today she leads a team of 14 at the Prince of Wales Hospital in Bridgend, part of the Abertawe Bro Morgannwyg University Health Board (ABMU).
Her work is primarily focused on elderly care, a field of nursing she believes is “often seen as negative, but it is actually one of the most challenging areas.”
Wendy explains that her patients often have multifaceted needs. “It takes a certain kind of person to work with the elderly,” she says. “ But I enjoy the challenge of dealing with many different needs, helping the patient cope and supporting the people caring for them.”
In addition to her clinical management role, Ms. Mashlan is also involved in research and teaching in the hospital and at university. She has been involved in developing a number of national policies including portfolio guidelines for the National Leadership and Innovation Agency, and RCN Safeguarding for Adults. Recent innovations have included an ANP-led elderly care ward referral system.
The Inspirational Nursing Leaders Award is awarded yearly to professionals who are selected for the impact of their work on nursing policy, practice or care; their influence on and understanding of how health and social care fit together; the sustainability of their achievement and the extent to which they act as role models for others. Many are nominated by Nursing Times readers and the final list is compiled by a panel of expert judges.
Wendy says of her two awards, “they raise the profile of what we do” but declares “one would have been enough!” She was awarded them for her help in running a specialist assessment service for older people arriving at the Bridgend hospital’s emergency department and for her current work as Lead Advance Nurse Practitioner. More recently Wendy has helped develop schemes such as the Frail Older Persons Assessment Tool (FOPAT).
This was developed following the publication of the Andrew Report: “Trusted to Care” in 2014 that identified poor documentation of the care of elderly patients among other issues at ABMU. It is designed to cut through unnecessary documentation and concentrate instead on the actual needs of each patient.
Other improvements on the wards at ABMU include increasing the number of baths for patients. Staff amended shift patterns to free up more time and are now able to bathe up to five patients daily. Also introduced was a hostess system, where hostesses serve food and thereby leave more time for nurses to help patients who struggle to eat unaided. Nurses and healthcare support workers are also freer to sit with patients in the day room, encouraging activities such as games and jigsaws.
Social events for patients, such as afternoon teas, and inviting live musicians to play have been organised by Wendy and other nurses at the Prince of Wales hospital; all designed to help patients feel more comfortable and at home.
Wendy is not resting on her laurels however, and still thinks more could be done to support an aging population.Community Involvementms. Schrader’s Teaching Portfolio Assessment
“I’d like to see more services that support patients in their own home, she says. “We should be building more resources in the community and increasing community involvement.”

Once she finishes her PhD however she admits she would like to head towards a consultant nurse post, but for now, “I absolutely love my role.”
The State Administration of Market Regulation has kicked off investigations into the Alibaba Group, laying claim that the company has been involved in monopolistic conduct such as ’forced exclusivity’ by requiring e-commerce merchants to pick only one platform as their exclusive distribution channel, according to the South China Morning Post. The paper says the investigation is being led by a former official from the state-owned China Communications Network Information Center (CCNIC), which oversees internet censorship and content management. The CCNIC was responsible for censoring the country’s most popular social media platforms like Weibo and QQ after they were launched in 2009.Alibaba has denied any wrongdoing and said it will fight the accusations. ’We are confident that we have not broken any laws,’ an Alibaba spokesman told the newspaper. A spokesman for the government’s Administration of Government Bureaus told the paper, ’If we find evidence, we will take strict action.’Alibaba Group started out as a online Alibaba.com marketplace, and now encompasses several other services and companies. The company’s affiliate Cainiao, which handles logistics, is reported to be one of the targets of the market regulation investigation.Alibaba is China’s biggest online retailer by total sales, and its Tmall platform — similar to Amazon’s online marketplace — has also become a shopping destination for many in the country.The company’s founder, Jack Ma said in a speech in 2014 that if the government shut down Alibaba, more than 4,000 offline companies that depend on it would fail. Tmall launched in 2013 and now has more than 500 brands and 30 million products, according to its website.It is not the first time that the company has faced government scrutiny.In 2012, Bloomberg reported that Alibaba was under investigation by the Cyberspace Administration for suspected financial fraud and a potential security threat in the wake of the September 11 attacks. The company denied those allegations, and the investigation was reportedly closed by the CACAB months later.Alibaba was also reported to have faced a similar investigation by the State Administration for Industry and Commerce (SAIC), which is part of the State Council, over allegations that online food sales platforms like Eat天下 and Amazon Food were illegally selling hard to get medical drugs and other goods. The company said at the time that it would ’not bow down to external pressure and we will continue to operate as normal.’In December, the company pulled its online food delivery service in Shenzhen for health and safety reasons.Alibaba’s future in the country has been called into question as well.In early December, a media report said Jack Ma was looking to sell a 40 percent stake in the company.

The emergency regulation removes any consequences for teachers’ and principals’ evaluations related to the grades 3-8 English Language Arts (ELA) and Math State Assessments and the State-provided growth score on Regents exams until the start of the 2019-2020 school year.The emergency regulations approved by the Board prohibit the use of results from the grades 3-8 ELA and math State assessments and State-provided growth scores for grades 9-12 principals in evaluating the performance of individual teachers or principals for the next four school years. During this time, districts and BOCES will continue to implement their approved APPR plans and provide teachers and principals with their HEDI scores and ratings calculated pursuant to that approved plan. However, districts and BOCES will also provide teachers and principals with ’transition scores’ and HEDI ratings that exclude the results of State assessments in grades 3-8 ELA or math (including where State-provided growth scores are used) or on State-provided growth scores on Regents exams.News And Notes 9 23/13teach To Be Happy HourThe transition scores and subsequent ratings will be determined based on the remaining subcomponents of the APPR that are not based on the grades 3-8 ELA or Math State assessments and/or a State-provided growth score on Regents examinations.
